I attended a conference in Sweden in August 2005. I had some time for birding near Vaxjo, during the 500 km drives between Stockholm and Vaxjo, and on a day trip to the "Cape May of Scandinavia." Stefan Marander was kind enough to show me around Oland, which is a long and narrow island off the southeast corner of the mainland of Sweden. Like Cape May, Oland is a jumping off point for south-bound migrants. It was too early for passerine migrants, but Oland was good for shorebirds and hawks. Some of the highlights were White-Tailed Eagle, Honey Buzzard, Goshawk, and most of the shorebirds that I had missed on previous trips to Europe. The Goshawk flew right over us at low altitude. It was quite a sight. The White-tailed Eagles were also very impressive.
